The Central Texas Beekeepers School in Brenham is widely regarded as the largest bee school in Texas, drawing more than 780 registered attendees in a recent year. Hosted by the Central Texas Beekeepers Association and held at Brenham High School, the annual one-day school runs a full slate of classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced beekeepers. A recent program offered 61 individual topics taught by 38 different experts, and new content is added each year so returning students keep learning.
Two features set this school apart. First is the live hive demonstration: attendees can accompany a beekeeper to an apiary at the school and watch and listen as a working hive is opened and inspected, which is invaluable for newcomers who have never seen the inside of a colony. Second is the scale of the vendor floor, with more than 40 vendors displaying products and services, so students can handle equipment in person before they buy. A BBQ lunch rounds out the day.
Brenham is the seat of Washington County, roughly midway between Houston and Austin on US-290, which puts the school within a comfortable drive for beekeepers across Central and Southeast Texas. Its traditional early-March timing (confirm the current date on the host’s site) falls at the front edge of the Texas swarm season, which runs roughly March through June, making it a well-timed refresher on splits, swarm prevention, and spring buildup.
